Anyone who knows me knows I’ve loved music by female artists for a *long* time. My first album was Tragic Kingdom, and I asked my mom to go to Lilith Fair when I was 8. (True story. ) Lately, I found myself gravitating towards more female-written music. Is it because I’m tired of the same heavy guitar feedback and synthesizers from male artists? Is it because I can empathize more with songwriting of other women? Probs a little of column A, a little of column B.

Either way, 50% of our population is female, but there are a whole lot of female voices missing from alternative and folk scenes, so here’s a list of songs by female artists that I’m digging. (Shoutout to Katie McNeil for her SXSW19 playlist and sharing her wealth of knowledge and excellent music taste with me!)

Even though I used to have a radio show in college and am somehow weirdly considered a hip-hop “influencer” by UMG, I’m only about half as cool yet twice as lazy as my husband, so I’m only going to give you a short synopsis of each song and the artist.

Here you go, be blessed:

1. Barrie -Clovers

I love this song so much, especially the Shins-like JAM at the end. I feel like you’re gonna hear it in a Madewell or Urban Outfitters at 8pm on a Tuesday night, AKA my favorite time to shop due to the lack of people.

2. Kacey Musgraves - Slow Burn

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/6ET9kf9riLETWs9lePUEAI" width="300" height="380" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>

Did you think you’d see anything from me without listing queen Kacey? I feel weird posting things about her because we went to camp together growing up, but I really feel like Kacey and I have hit similar seasons of our life around the same time -- we even got married around the same time.  I would walk in the sunset listening to this song with my husband right after we were married, so this album will forever have a sweet spot in my lil’ heart!

3. I'm With Her - Overland

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/4x8q2pNkL1UVTf6b4l2TG3" width="300" height="380" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>

I love this adorable folk trio -- these girls are like an all-female Lake Street Drive or folksy HAIM. They’ve gained notoriety from their spot-on Adele cover, but I love their song Overland right now. Check out their Tiny Desk Concert for bonus muzik.

4. Maggie Effing Rogers - Give a Little

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/3D4uUFRoYDFHbkQlTKL2Om" width="300" height="380" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>

Gosh d*ngit, anything by Maggie is gonna be so freakin’ good. In case if you’ve been living under a rock (it’s okay if you have), she was discovered by Pharrell while she was a senior at NYU doing her senior project, which is now the hit song Alaska. My senior project was auditing a boutique targeted for senior women in College Station. I’m not bitter or anything.

I’m willing to bet good money that she’ll be nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys next year. Considering she’s completely sold out her world tour, was featured on John Mayer’s Current Mood with a KILLER acoustic set, and she’s hitting the festival circuit this summer including Coachella, I think it’s a safe bet.

5. Bad Bad Hats - It Hurts

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/71N5U2T2S6QT4uCCKa3KLr" width="300" height="380" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>

I love this song so much. It’s upbeat and perfect for driving with windows down on a sunny day, or a feminista indie movie like Lady Bird or Whip It. Just listen and enjoy.

6. Bloods - Feelings

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/5NMe04OzNGW0SFy4RuUKc3" width="300" height="380" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>

Bloods feels like a modern Go-Go Girls, and this song is chirpy and catchy. I hope to catch them at SXSW!

7. Zoe Johnson -

Let’s be honest: I’m not a music snob. I’ll shamelessly jam out to Katy Perry and really any catchy and talented artist, and you’ll never see me apologize for it. So I’ll gladly admit when I see a talented artist, even if it’s EDM. I love Zoe Johnson’s voice and how Above and Beyond’s (EDM producers). If you don’t like EDM, feel free to skip over this one.

8. The Beths - Uptown Girl

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/5F6RCPlMvAzSqmh9dwFQwO" width="300" height="380" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>

If I ever run away to join a band, it would be this band. This is CLASSIC girl rock and gives me early 00s Le Tigre Deceptacon vibes, which I’ll forever love. Heavy drums and electric guitars? Count me in.

9. Margo Price - Pay Gap

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/1IHb1MeYTP0cwpcdGevmMy" width="300" height="380" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>

Margo Price is sassy, unapologetic, and a talented songwriter. She’s like more folky / classic Kacey Musgraves or a feminist lady Jimmy Buffet.

Her song Pay Gap is one of my favorites, so much so I tweeted about it, and somehow Margo found my Twitter account (I did not @ her!) and she liked a bunch of my tweets including one about my husband smashing a couple beers @ Applebees, so we’re basically best friends now. Listen to this song right now. This song is not for the easily offended.

10. H.E.R. - Hard Place

<iframe src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/47OqtEbWGkG6eDNGUNCYYB" width="300" height="380" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe>

DANG YALL, Did you see H.E.R at the Grammys when she played Hard Place? ALL of the her songs are this good. Anytime you give me a bunch of minor chords and a good beat I’m gonna be obsessed, but this girl is next level. I’m gonna be watching this performance for a LONG long time. And the Grammy audience was going WILD her for performance, which is already a ~hard place~ to perform, so you know it’s good. I’ll walk myself out.

That’s all for now! If you were too lazy to read all of it like I probably would be too, here’s the playlist. Put on some headphones for max enjoyment.
